Sufjan Stevens Has Scored a New Ballet

In another addition to his already impressive resume as an artist, American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens (who was recently invited by the Academy thanks to his work in “Call Me By Your Name”) has now gone and scored another new ballet.

The score comes as a gift to a past collaborator Stevens’: New York-based choreographer and designer Justin Peck. The full orchestra score by Stevens will be accompanying “New Peck 1,” which will premiere at the New York City Ballet in January of next year.

Stevens has previously composed original music for two other Peck-choreographed ballets, including last year’s “The Decalogue” and 2014’s “Everything Must Go.” Plus, six years ago in 2012, arranger Michael Atkinson orchestrated selections from Stevens’ heavily electronic 2001 LP Enjoy Your Rabbit for Peck’s ballet “Year of the Rabbit.”

“New Peck 1” will be the first production in a three-part series organized by the New York City Ballet, preceding Balanchine’s “Symphony in Three Movements” set to Stravinsky and Peck’s “The Times Are Racing” set to original music by electronic musician and composer Dan Deacon.
