On August 2, Le Poisson Rouge presents a special concert of the soon-to-be-released biopic Nico, 1988 which tells the story of the final years of Christa Päffgen, known by her stage name of Nico and her work with the Velvet Underground and Andy Warhol. Nico’s life and music will be brought to life in honor of the August 1 New York City release of the biopic, featuring an all-female cast of performances by U.S. Girls, Julie Byrne, Marissa Nadler, Lizzi Bougatsos (member of Gang Gang Dance and IUD), L’Rain, and Tammy Faye Starlite. The concert will feature both Nico covers and originals in an intimate setting, making it a truly unique one-night only experience.
The film shows the woman behind the icon of Nico, documenting her struggle with demons later in life as she embarks on what would be her final tour. Nico, born in Germany, began her career as a model and actress, fleeing to New York and working with Andy Warhol by the mid-1960s. Nico embarked on her solo music career after working as a vocalist for the Velvet Underground and has been cited as an influence on many artists such as Patti Smith, Morrissey, and Björk as well as several gothic bands.
The Le Poisson Rouge event is sure to cultivate a powerful, moving night of music and art, celebrating both powerful female musicians and the work and life of Nico.
