Veteran rockers, Death Cab for Cutie, head out on a national tour this fall in support of their ninth studio album, Thank You For Today, which drops on August 17. After twenty years in the business, the band is still churning out deep, moving tracks, only improved by time and musical growth. Since their 1998 debut album Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie have remained an unmovable staple in the indie and alternative universe, with essential songs like “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” “President of What?” and “Transatlanticism.” Before their US tour kicks off, Death Cab for Cutie hits a handful of festival stops this summer, including Travelers’ Rest and Life is Beautiful. They’ve also added a UK and Europe tour for the beginning of 2019 in promotion of the album.
Their poignant new single, “Gold Rush,” details frontman Ben Gibbard’s relationship with his continually gentrifying hometown of Seattle. Of the single, Gibbard tells NPR, “It’s an observation, but more about coming to terms with the passage of time and losing the people and the moments in my life all over again as I walk down a street that is now so unfamiliar.” The Seattleites have always let their hometown play an important role in their music, from lyrics to even merchandise, so the latest single brings a kind of nostalgia to fans as well. In late June, Death Cab for Cutie paid tribute to their hometown as they played a free show at the historic Paramount Theatre in Seattle in celebration of its 90th anniversary.
Death Cab for Cutie plays two night at the Kings Theatre this October with support from Charly Bliss. If their latest single is any indication of the new album, it’s certainly a show not to be missed.
