Veteran groove metal outfit Soulfly has been performing a new song on recent tour dates and they have announced that a new album, Ritual, will be coming out this October, as reported by The PRP. The band just finished up a successful North American run with legendary death metal group Nile, so now is the right time for the band to drop another pummeling release. The new record was recorded with producer Josh Wilbur (Gojira, Lamb of God) and it will be the first new collection of material from Soulfly since 2015’s crushing Archangel. Ritual will mark the recording debut of bassist Mike Leon, who joined the band in 2015 after the departure of Tony Campos. The new song that Soulfly have been performing recently, “The Summoning,” is another brutal blend of down-tuned grooves, harsh vocals, and plenty of slamming drumming from Zyon Cavalera. Known as one of the most intense live acts in the metal underground, Soulfly is once again back on the upswing. Frontman Max Cavalera has kept himself busy with other projects in between Soulfly releases, including teaming up with his brother Igor in Cavalera Conspiracy and playing in the supergroup Killer Be Killed, who have regrouped recently to work on recording their second album.
Cavalera got his start fronting the legendary Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura, churning out some of the most influential metal releases of the late ’80s and early ’90s and putting Brazil on the map as one of the hotbeds for heavy metal music. Eventually, a dispute with the other members of the band led to his departure in 1996, and Cavalera formed Soulfly right after. Instead of continuing the thrash metal sound of his previous band, Cavalera and Soulfly focused more on groove metal and adding in elements of industrial and electronic to their caustic sound.
