Charli XCX Drops Two New Songs “Focus” and “No Angel”

Charli XCX is keeping the momentum up, releasing two more new songs in 2018. The two songs, titled “Focus” and “No Angel,” are available for streaming below. They follow in the wake of her recent song and video for “5 In The Morning.” In addition to the new solo single, Charli also appeared on the epic superstar collaboration of “bitches” with Tove Lo, Elliphant, Icona Pop and ALMA. Perhaps the biggest song of them all that she appears on is the mildly-controversial Rita Ora song “Girls,” which also features Cardi B and Bebe Rexha. Check out the new songs below:

“No Angel” has a club-friendly beat and features drums, programming and keyboards from current indie-electronic favorite SOPHIE. Production was handled by Invisible Men. As is par for the course with Charli XCX, the song is fairly explicit wit lines like “I’m sorry that you caught me / Fuckin’ in the hotel / It didn’t mean anything.” The song describes how Charli will admit she’s no angel but is capable of learning, though there’s something about her delivery that indicates that maybe she won’t learn to improve her ways; besides, her lover is in too deep at this point.

“Focus’ is equally synth-driven, though instrumentally it delves into slightly more experimental and interesting territory. Don’t get mixed up, this is still a pure pop track that takes heavy influence from electronic music. In contrast to the lyrics of “No Angel,” “Focus” is a pure love song, imploring the subject of the song “I just want you to focus on my love.” Though with Charli XCX, it’s hard to not read into more explicit meanings of these simplistic lyrical bars.
