One person was killed during a hit-and-run accident near the Dutch music festival, Pinkpop. Pitchfork reports hours after the festival ended, a man drove his van into four people at a campsite close to the festival. The victim, a 35-year-old festival volunteer, died early Monday morning.
BBC reports the three other people involved in the collision were critically injured. Following the accident, the 34-year-old suspect fled the scene and abandoned his vehicle in a nearby location.
The suspect was later arrested in Amsterdam after contacting police. The authorities have yet to determine whether the collision was accidental or deliberate.
The 2018 three-day festival hosted performances by Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, The Offspring and more. The death of the 35-year-old volunteer is the first in PinkPop’s 49-year history.
Pinkpop director Jan Smeets issued a statement regarding the incident, saying, “We were really intensely shocked after the news this morning that there were four victims in an incident on the Mensheggerweg. The Pinkpop festival seemed a great success but the weekend is totally overshadowed by this terrible incident. We want to convey our sympathy and support to all those involved and family members. The employees and the public were informed early this morning. We wish all those involved a lot of strength.”
