After a successful debut in New York in May, David Lynch’s annual Festival of Disruption comes back around the West Coast. The two-day festival returns to the Theatre At Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on October 13th and 14th. Curated entirely by auteur filmmaker and artist David Lynch and presented by Alex and Ani, the 4th annual festival is back with another diverse group of musicians, artists, and filmmakers to make any Lynch fans or lover of art, film, and music very happy.
Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA leads the musical lineup slated to perform at the Ace Hotel, he is planning to re-score the classic 1978 kung-fu film “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin” from the opening sequence to closing credits, syncing scenes from the movie with tracks from Wu-Tang’s legendary discography. David Lynch will do an audience Q&A in the afternoon while those attending drink complimentary coffee and donuts. Francis Ford Coppola, the multiple Academy Award-winning filmmaker behind the Godfather series, will also give a Q&A and also introduce a screening of his 1996 film “Jack” starring the late Robin Williams.
For hardcore Lynch fans will be happy to know that as part of the festival, classical ensemble Dover Quartet will play music from their Twin Peaks Suite; while Justin Johnson, a musician from Nashville and who was discovered by Lynch via Youtube, will treat festival-goers to blues and roots music. The festival will also feature a rare stateside visit from legendary performer Grace Jones, who will discuss and screen her documentary “Bloodlight and Bambi.” Longtime Lynch fan Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas) and DJ QBert, a DJ set by members of Los Angeles-based band Saint Motel, will perform for the second time ever, as well during the two-day festival. And to add some nostalgia, there will be a musical trip back in time with the amazing Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra.
Lynch named the event after one of his favorite quotes, attributed to the founder of Transcendental Meditation, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: “Life is a festival of disruption.” Indeed, only from the mind of Lynch could such a collection of artists join forces for this once-in-a-lifetime weekend. All of the participants were chosen because they champion creativity, experimentation, integrity, beauty, depth, and kindness – they embody the spirit of Festival of Disruption.”
David Lynch expressed that “The Festival of Disruption is not only a music festival, it‘s also an art festival and forum for speakers to share ideas and inspire creativity. It promotes Transcendental Meditation, as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, to end suffering for the people and bring happiness and peace. The Festival of Disruption wants to disrupt the old bad, and bring in the new good!”
