Fans were no doubt excited by the prospect of two of metal’s most interesting bands touring together this year, with the Mastodon and Primus tour being one of the hottest tickets on the summer circuit this year. Primus, in particular, are known for their wacky songs and amazing musicianship, and fans were undoubtedly hoping that there would be some collaboration between Primus and Mastodon on this tour. The PRP has reported just that: Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor joined Primus for a zany version of the Peter Gabriel classic “Intruder” at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre in Sterling Heights, MI.
The song was originally covered by Primus in the early ’90s and appeared on their Miscellaneous Debris EP. The band had not played the song live since 1992, making the performance quite surprising. In typical Primus fashion, Les Claypool ramped up the song’s weirdness, taking the original version and turning into a dissonant and funky track. Dailor helped out drummer Tim Alexander, adding in some solid snare playing and building out the song’s slamming drum march.
Primus is currently touring in support of last year’s wild album, The Desaturating Seven, while Mastodon is touring in support of their acclaimed Emperor of Sand album, which netted the band some of their best reviews in their entire career.
