While Jon Spencer is known as a prolific musician, churning out music with the likes of Pussy Galore, Boss Hog, Heavy Trash, and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, he has never released a solo album until now. Brooklyn Vegan has reported that Spencer’s debut record, entitled Spencer Sings the Hits! which will be released this fall on In The Red Records. Spencer has also dropped the first single/music video from the record, the surging noise rock of “Do the Trash.”
Riding a gnarly drum beat along with some heavily distorted bass and guitar work, the song contains another vintage vocal performance from Spencer, who delivers some serious attitude to every word. The song is a strutting riff-rocker but with some serious attitude, with plenty of grit and dirt in the mix. There are certainly some similarities between this new material and the last Jon Spencer Blues Explosion record, 2015’s No Wave Dance Party. For this record, Spencer teamed up with Quasi frontman Sam Coomes and drummer M. Sord along with producer Bill Skibbe.
The music video is based around plenty of old movie and television clips from a long-forgotten era, combining plenty of weird b-movie clips into the perfect combination of shots, fitting with the song’s wacky vibe.
Spencer will be going on a short tour with the Melvins this fall, which promises to be one of the loudest shows of the year, with both artists being well-known for their sonic assault on the eardrums.
