A Perfect Circle has unveiled a new video for the song “The Contrarian” another track from their excellent comeback record Eat the Elephant. The video is yet another piece to the “hologram edition” of the album, which will be released in a special edition box set.

The holographic album, directed by Steven Sebring is yet another bold artistic move for the band. Visually speaking, the video contains plenty of dazzling effects and recurring motifs, such as the oddly colored squid monster from the Eat the Elephant album art.

Musically speaking, “The Contrarian” is a piano-driven piece that combines some subtle electronic textures along with Maynard James Keenan’s evocative and politically conscious vocals. A nod to the growing unrest in the country and those who aim to be the contrarian in every argument, taking the other side simply for the sake of provocation and attention, the song is one of the stronger tracks from the record.

The holographic album is viewable via a prism included in the box set. This is the second clip from the holographic album to be released, following “Talk Talk,” which came out last month.

The band is seemingly back to full steam after a very long hiatus, with a new album as well as new tour dates taking them far into the fall. Since first forming nearly twenty years ago, the relationship between songwriter Billy Howerdel and vocalist Maynard James Keenan has produced some incredible music, with Eat the Elephant continuing that trend.
