A new Gorillaz album may soon be on the way. Consequences of Sound reports a website, TheNowNow.tv, has been launched and provides a teaser video for the new album, allegedly titled The Now Now, and due out June 29.
Gorillaz most recent album, Humanz, released in 2017, was the group’s first album in six years. At the end of 2017, Spin reports co-creator Hewlett indicated another album would be released in 2018.
The first track from the alleged new album came during a March concert in Chile, when Gorillaz debuted a song titled “Hollywood.” After Albarn performed the new song, a series of posters appeared at London’s All Points East festival that directed people to TheNowNow.tv.
Gorillaz, a virtual band, characterized by their hybridization of Britpop and hip-hop, was created in 1998 by Blur’s Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. The high concept band features four animated members including 2-D (lead vocals, keyboards), Murdoc Niccals (bass guitar), Noodle (guitar, keyboards), and Russell Hobbs (drums, percussion). All of the group members are fictional. Alban alone is a permanent member of Gorillaz, often working in collaboration with other artists.
In an interview with Vulture, Albarn discusses the concept behind Gorillaz and his prolific nature. “Gorillaz isn’t about anything specific. It’s very unruly. You can go anywhere and do anything, and that’s the whole point of it. There’s no agenda. I’ll go with what’s exciting, and I’ll make it work, because I can pretty much lend my hand to anything, musically. Also, I could keep knocking out tunes for the next year or two. So, just look at this album as the nucleus of something much bigger.”
