The #MeToo movement is a powerful movement against sexual harassment and assault and has been gaining speed wherever it goes. The hashtag spread in October of 2017 followed after the sexual allegations against film titan Harvey Weinstein. With such a powerful movement, how does one go about writing a song to express feelings for the movement surrounding a man like Weinstein? You do what Amanda Palmer does and you write a song around the man.
Today, Palmer, former lead singer of the Dresden Dolls, and Welsh singer-songwriter Jasmine Power have shared a new track titled “Mr. Weinstein Will See You.” Even though the song has Weinstein’s name in it, the song doesn’t actually use the producer’s name in the lyrics. Instead, Palmer and Power sing the inner monologue of one woman as she enters the office of someone like Weinstein. Palmer’s lyrics are beautifully and politically poetic with powerful lines like “don’t touch me /I’m not here to help and “shut your eyes pay no attention / just keep calm and carry on.” It is a song that is hard to listen to but one that should. An anthem that truly defines the impact of the #MeToo movement
The song is available to stream and buy, but if you want to help the #MeToo movement, I suggest you buy it wherever you can. With 100% of the digital sales of the song will be donated to the Times Up legal defense fund.
