Youtube is launching new music streaming service, available to the public this Tuesday, May 22nd according to Pitchfork. The platform known for funny cat videos is remixing their subscription service with the newly revamped Youtube Music. A video site where millions of people flock to watch videos of everything and where young people can become famous with a push of a button. It is also a site that people go to listen to music. So it’s no surprise that the video service is branching out.
Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s head of music had this to say in an interview; “YouTube, in general, is where most music is consumed. If there were ever a company that could build a successful subscription business, it would be YouTube.” The new subscription will be $10-a-month membership and their Youtube Red’s ad-free alternative to Youtube with its unlimited video views, and exclusive content is refurbished as YouTube Premium bumping its price up just $2 more from $9.99 per month to $11.99. Another streaming service connected to Youtube, Google Play Music is on its way out, but those with the service will get access to the new service instantly.
With so many streaming services available and all providing the same content, the question remains whether YouTube Music will stand out. According to T. Jay Fowler, an executive at YouTube said the new music streaming would be a “deeply personalized experience.” He also confirms that the YouTube recommendation algorithm is an essential foundation of YouTube Music’s recommendation engine. What does this mean? Well, your history on YouTube will continue to give you suggestions. Though, this is nothing new. Most streaming services does this.
Some other features of the new streaming service will have something called the Offline Mixtape, an offline playlist that one can set to refresh automatically with a collection of “songs you’ve been listening to frequently” as well as new songs. For artists, there will be analytics tools to keep track of play counts and assess fan demographics. If you pay the subscription, like any other music streaming service, you get the full experience without the annoyance of commercials. Subscribers can listen to music in the background while they play around with other apps, the ability to download music.
With the new streaming service about to unveil, there no surprise that there will be competition. The new service will have to compete with other subscription streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal. Spotify alone has over 75 million users and Apple Music with 40 million. So whether YouTube can get out of the shadows and become the streaming site to be, only time will tell.
The new YouTube Music will launch in U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and South Korea. After that, the service will then be available in 14 additional countries.
