For years Imaad Wasif has presented a unique blend of heavy music and psychedelia, offering up a mystical sound that is as pop-oriented as it is experimental. Wasif has another album called Great Eastern Sun set for digital release today, May 18, 2018 on Nomad Eel Records. The vinyl will see release on August 21, 2018 and can be pre-ordered here. Today we have the premiere of the first song from the new album, “God Is Not A Mountain.” The song channels the best of Pink Floyd while avoiding the expanded, over-ambitious sound that at time could plague those titans of classic rock. On “God Is Not A Mountain,” Wasif keeps the experimentation to a minimum, instead focusing on the ever-uplifting harmonies of the mostly-acoustic song. You can hear it below:
Great Eastern Sun is considered a lost album of Wasif’s, a collection of recordings that date back to 2012. While they were shelved due to being “too personal” for the public, they have now emerged as Wasif has gone through what he calls a “an emergence from a cocoon.” This record features Brian Chase of Yeah Yeah Yeahs on drums and Bob Bruno of Best Coast on bass, giving it an all-star lineup that shines through in the songs’ professionalism. Wasif himself plays the 6 and 12 string guitar, sitar, keyboards, santoor, harmonium, piano and synths on the album.
