Swedish pop sensation Lykke Li has released a new song called “utopia” which is also accompanied by a new emotional video. The song will be included on her forthcoming album called so sad so sexy which is set for a June 8th release date on RCA. In April she released two singles “deep end” and “hard rain” in preparation for the albums release as well.
The video for “utopia” is a heartfelt ode to motherhood and it includes visuals of Li as a child with her mother along with clips of her and her toddler son. In the description of the video Li wrote, “MOTHER TO MOTHER TO MOTHER.” The song is a dreamy approach to Li’s signature range and an emotional journey complimented by the real visuals provided by the video.
“Utopia is all my mother ever wanted for me and all I ever want for him.” The video is directed by Clara Cullen who is known mostly for her work in the fashion world having worked with clients such as Chanel, Levi’s, Nordstrom and Nike.
Li, born Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson, has not released a record since 2014s I Never Learn and in 2016 she formed the group LIV with Andrew Wyatt, Pontus Winnberg, Bjorn Yttling and Jeff Bhasker. So sad so sexy will be her fourth studio album and will feature Portland rapper Amine and production work by Malay, Rostam, Bhasker, and T-Minus among others.
In a 2016 interview with Pitchfork, Li talked about the writing process on so sad so sexy and said “I feel like I’m always doing opposite things, I’m accidentally doing pop, in a very non-shameful way.” Fans can catch Li during her upcoming show at Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on 5-22.
