Scott Hutchison, the 36-year-old singer for Scottish group Frightened Rabbit, was confirmed dead by Scottish police on Friday (May 11), according to billboard. Concern for the singer began to mount when, on May 8, Hutchison tweeted, “Be so good to everyone you love. It’s not a given. I’m so annoyed that it’s not. I didn’t live by that standard and it kills me. Please, hug your loved ones.” He went on to tweet, “I’m away now. Thanks.”
Mxdwn reported Hutchison was last seen when he left the Dakota Hotel in South Queensbury at 1 a.m. (U.K. time). After a frantic 2-day search, Edinburgh police reported they had discovered a body at Port Edgar near South Queensferry.
Hutchison’s family released a statement saying they were “utterly devastated with the tragic loss of our beloved Scott.” They went on to say they “remained positive and hopeful that he would walk back through the door, having taken some time away to compose himself. Scott, like many artists, wore his heart on his sleeve and that was evident in the lyrics of his music and the content of many of his social media posts. He was passionate, articulate and charismatic, as well as being one of the funniest and kindest people we knew. Friends and family would all agree that he had a brilliant sense of humour and was a great person to be around.” The family also described Hutchison as a “wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend” who always made time for loved ones.
Hutchison was open about his struggles with mental health issues. In August 2016, mxdwn reported Hutchison suffered a twitter meltdown tweeting “Goodbye to Frightened Rabbit. All it has ever been is me boring people with lies and making creative currency out of other people’s hurt.”
A statement from Hutchison’s family addresses his openness to share his struggles: “Scott battled bravely with his own issues for many years and we are immensely proud of him for being so open with his struggles. His willingness to discuss these matters in the public domain undoubtedly raised awareness of mental health issues and gave others confidence and belief to discuss their own issues.”
Frightened Rabbit bandmates also released a statement saying, “There are no words to describe the overwhelming sadness and pain that comes with the death of our beloved Scott, but to know he is no longer suffering brings us some comfort.”
Bandmates went on to say, “Reading messages of support and hope from those he has helped through his art has helped immensely and we encourage you all to continue doing this. He will be missed by all of us and his absence will always be felt but he leaves a legacy of hope, kindness and colour that will forever be remembered and shared.”
