The Growlers Announce Return of Beach Goth Moniker for Annual Music Festival

On May 7, garage surf rockers, the Growlers, announced their Summer Beach Goth Festival will return this Summer with its original name in tow.

According to the OCR, the festival, which debuted in 2012, ran for five years at the Observatory in Santa Ana until November 2016, when Noise Group (the Observatory’s parent company), sued the Growlers, alleging the Observatory created the festival and owned the name as well as merchandising rights.

In a 2014 interview with OCR, frontman Brooks Nielsen said, ““It was an obvious thing; we were making beach songs about death or dark things. To me, it just feels natural. I can’t deny that beach goth really is something that defines the Growlers.”

In 2017, the Growler’s renamed the festival Growlers 6, and moved to San Pedro, according to the Daily News. The 2017 line-up included Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Modest Mouse. The band announced the 2018 festival will be held Sunday, August 5, but will release the location and line-up May 14.
