Get ready everyone, because Japanese pop-metal sensation BABYMETAL is back with a new song and a new music video for “Distortion,” as reported by Loudwire. The band teased new material last month on April Fool’s Day, but now they have gone ahead and released their first new music since 2016’s awesome Metal Resistance album. “Distortion” features the band’s trademark epic guitar harmonies, pummeling double bass drums, and angelic female lead vocals, sounding like some crazy musical mash-up from an anime or video game. The music video depicts a dystopian future where a masked warrior does battle with a gigantic stone creature. Eventually, seven different warriors each get screen time as a gigantic portal opens up in the sky above a destroyed cityscape. This is certainly tied in with the concept of the new album, which has something to do with seven great warriors teaming up to save the world.
The group is currently gearing up for a series of tour dates around North America and Europe in the coming months. For the uninformed, BABYMETAL has become one of the biggest metal groups in the world, and for good reason as they combine the seemingly disparate worlds of heavy metal and Japanese pop music. Fronted by the charismatic Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-Metal), along with Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi (a.k.a. Moametal) providing backing vocals and dancing, the band is truly something to behold. While the idea of combining Japanese girl group pop with crushing metal may not seem like a good fit on paper, BABYMETAL finds a way to make it work extremely well. The band has become wildly popular in America, landing a coveted opening gig for the Red Hot Chili Peppers last year and having plenty of success on their own headlining dates as well.
