TT a.k.a. Theresa Wayman, from the Los Angeles band Warpaint, has released the new song “The Dream,” off her solo album LoveLaws due out May 18. Wayman, born in Eugene, Oregon, formed Warpaint in 2004 with Emily Kokal and sisters Jenny Lee Lindberg and Shannon Sossamon. The band’s release of The Fool, in 2010, received critical success and reached 176 on the Billboard 200.
According to Stereogum, in recent years, members have begun to go solo. In 2016, Lindberg released her solo album right on! and the trend continues with Wayman’s release of LoveLaws. The new album was recorded in Wayman’s home studio and co-produced with brother, Ivan Wayman. Additionally, Warpaint bandmates and Beastie Boys keyboardist Money Mark, made contributions.
The new song, hails back to 90s trip hop with sounds reminiscent of Tricky (especially the album Maxinquaye), Portishead, and Massive Attack. Wayman has acknowledged the influence, and the track, “The Dream,” skillfully updates the genre using hypnotic vocals and a slowed down tempo surrounded by a pulsating beat. Take a listen below:
