Smooth and lulling pop chords condense quietly melodic vocals in Optiganally Yours’ new single “Night Shop.” The group, which consists of Rob Crow (Pinback, Heavy Vegetables, Physics) and Pea Hix, began in the nineties when Hix and Crow (roommates) became enamored with the Optigan, an organ originally produced by Mattel in the 1970s. The unique, organic, and lo-fi sound the Optigan produced became the catalyst for the harmonic, fresh, and nostalgic sound the band has been synthesizing for decades.
It’s’s been 18 years since the duo’s second album, Optiganally Yours Presents: Exclusively Talentmaker, and Joyful Noise’s Artist in Residence series has helped facilitate the release of new recordings. The new album has been years in the process. Crow recently said, “Several of these sessions never became discs, so Pea chopped them up, as you would with a real Optigan. And we wrote all these new songs using these materials, in addition to my guitar and voice of course. I think it’s the best record I’ve ever done.” “Night Shop,” with its bright and uplifting sound coupled with Crow’s honeyed vocals serves as a prologue to the upcoming release of Rob Crow’s Artist-In-Residence box set from Joyful Noise Recordings.
