Hailing from Rhode Island, Belly is an alt-rock band that formed in early 1991 by former member of Breeders Tanya Donelly. When formed with Donelly, the lineup included bassist Fred Arlong, guitarist Tom Gorman and drummer Chris Gorman. However, as years passed, Arlong decided to leave the band and, so, he was replaced with Gail Greenwood on bass.
Now, after 23 years of no new works stemming from Belly, the band aptly chose record store day, April 21, to debut their new single weeks before their official album release. In collaboration with every audiophile’s favorite holiday, a ten-inch beautiful piece of vinyl was released in special Belly colors. The record featured two tracks from the forthcoming album DOVES; a “Hushabye Mountain” variation originally performed by Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the new original single “Starryeyed.”
On the ever-special 4/20, Belly premiered the “Starryeyed” track on BBC 6 radio program “Radcliffe & Maconie.”
As Chris Gorman explains, “‘Starryeyed’ is a last minute addition, the song was written in a single day. Tom sent the guitar part which spontaneously inspired the melody and lyrics. We are currently working on a full band version that we hope to play while touring this year. This is our first record store day exclusive release, and we are really happy to be supporting independent record stores that provide a much needed human element to the recorded music business.”
May 4, the world will finally be able to hear the new Belly record, which we have been patiently waiting 23 years for. Do not worry, though, if you need some more of their music in your life. If you pre-order DOVES here, then you will be able to hear their brand-new songs “Shiny One” and “Stars Align.”
