Multi-instrumentalists Ben Chisholm and Felix Skinner are both well-established players in the heavy music and experimental scenes, performing with Chelsea Wolfe and one half of Wreck & Reference, respectively. Fans of avant-garde music are in luck because the two have teamed up for an excellent piece of post-rock that is alternately intense and meditative, challenging and relaxing.
We are pleased to have the exclusive stream of Ben Chisholm and Felix Skinne’s debut album together Burgeoning Verse, which you can find in full below. The album can be purchased and streamed everywhere after its release date of April 20, 2018 – it is out via Weyrd Son Records.
Burgeoning Verse took four years for Chisholm and Skinner to complete; this meticulous craftsmanship is apparent in the engaging and though-provoking compositions of this album. The record opens with “I” (if you cannot tell yet, all of the songs are untitled and distinguished by Roman numerals which correspond to their track listing) and its mesmerizing piano intro as ambient noise filters in over the top of the mix. It isn’t until halfway through the second song that percussion of any kind is found, as the droning “II” introduces some drumming to accompany the disarming instrumentals.
Another highlight of Burgeoning Verse is its first single “IV,” a brooding, atmospheric track based around simple piano figures and a dirge-like drum beat. Andrew Clinco of Drab Majesty and Marriages provided drums for the song, which abruptly transitions into a shuffling beat as it crescendos over the final third.
