Little Boots – Burn

One big empowering female party

Victoria Hesketh, also known as Little Boots, is bringing a young, fresh outlook to indie-pop music. The English synth-pop singer is coming back for more after the release of her EP, Afterhours, last summer. The 33-year-old was originally a part of Dead Disco but separated to focus on solo endeavors. The artist has released three solo albums to date along with a few EPs. Burn is a short but sweet example of the woman power Hesketh wanted to show off to the world.

“Shadows,” the first of four tracks on the album, is a classic break up song. Hesketh sings of going out to distract from the deeper feelings of bitterness and being alone. Little Boots explored the idea of keeping busy just so the feeling of solidarity wouldn’t creep up on her. With help from Joyce Muniz, the beat was set. “Picture” is the second track, explaining our complicated relationship with social media. The idea of technology has become an overwhelming power force in our everyday life. Producer Lauren Flax helped the singer put together what she calls a collection of “organic and electronic sounds” according to an interview with Consequence of Sound. The use of piano, strings and guitar makes a combination so beautiful, it makes the high intensity of our social media intake a little less intense.

“Eros” is a hip-hop, dance collaboration explanation of how the Greeks really expressed their love during the time of gods and goddesses. Planningtorock collaborated with Little Boots to create a ’70s style workout dance remix. “River” is a composition of how grief weighs heavily on our souls. Hesketh, with the help of Cora Novoa, puts her powerful vocals over layers of synthesizers and guitars to create a mask of confidence.

The person we know as Little Boots is a woman who takes pride in what she stands for, and that is empowering those around her and allowing women to succeed. This all-women project comes at the perfect time in society and will stand the test of time. Burn is a must-listen EP for Spring.
