Attention mother nature, Fleet Foxes is back and giving credit where credit’s due – to the Earth? After six long years, the loss of drummer Josh Tillman, and an abundant amount of fan speculation on new music – finally Crack-Up was released in October of 2017. While, yes, this was almost 7 months ago at this point – don’t worry there is A LOT to listen to. Even if you’ve listened once or twice through, listen again. This album is so complex and detailed there is something new every time you listen.
The album is named after a collection of essays by F. Scott Fitzgerald of the same name. It contains unpublished letters, notes, and three essays originally written for Esquire magazine in 1936. The collection was compiled and edited by Edmund Wilson shortly after Fitzgerald’s death in 1940. The essays begin with the quote, “Of course all life is a process of breaking down.” This work definitely reflects the work in Crack-Up, as the album intentionally sounds unpolished, and natural covering topics such as death and how our humanity interacts and defies natural processes. The lyric, “Fire can’t doubt its heat. Water can’t doubt its power. You’re not a gift, you’re not a flower,” speaks to this idea of man living with pronounced false confidence in their own mortality. This theme carries throughout the album in a cohesive, yet not overly boastful manner.
Playing at the historical and cultural landmark, The Warner Grand Theatre, Fleet Foxes’ pre-Coachella show on April 12th will be a night of intimate reflection and one-ness with past, present, and future.
