Lissie – Castles

When haunting meets dreamy

The relatable themes of love and heartbreak run rampant through Lissie’s newest release, Castles, making it an album for all listeners across the board. The album starts somewhat slow with the track “World Away,” which possesses a piano part with a slight resemblance to the one in “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles. The rest of the song has a haunting feeling to it, and in only two and a half minutes, sets the stage for an album that is sure to make the listener feel some things.

“Crazy Girl” is the second track on the album and stands out due to its catchy beat and relatable lyrics. This song offers a completely different vibe than the song the album kicked off with. The lyrics address the struggle one faces when they know they should leave someone, but can’t seem to find the courage to do so, which seems to be something that could be relatable to many. The chill yet somewhat aggressive vibe this song proposes makes for one of the stronger tracks on the album.

The next track, “Castles,” is another strong track on the album. The opening lyric, “I’d live and die for love alone,” leaves a lasting impression and can’t be ignored upon the opening of this track. It is a slower song, but the vocal style and lyricism make for a beautiful song overall. It is hard to take a song like this off of repeat.

“Feels Good” is another slower song, but has a dreamy vibe about it that is refreshing. This song is especially strong in the instrumental department, which is the main reason there is a dreamy mood present. The vocals on this track mix really well with the instrumental elements and add a nice layer of complexity. Yet again, Lissie writes about something that is sure to resonate with many listeners for different reasons.

As mentioned above, both themes of love and heartbreak are addressed over the duration of this album and “Love Blows” is a definite tip-of-the-hat to heartbreak. The chorus of this song sounds very angsty and haunting which matches the feelings one goes through in heartbreak. The style of vocals matched with the instrumentals makes it feel almost like you’re going to war over this heartache, which doesn’t leave much room for a dull moment on this short track.

The album comes full circle as far as the haunting vibe goes with the closing track, “Meet Me in the Mystery.” This song is filled with different aspects that add up to make it one of the most epic tracks on the entire album. It really makes a statement to end the album with such a strong and intense song. This track also does a great job of showcasing not only the creativity of Lissie but the talent behind the vocals and instrumentals. It is definitely a song that will make an everlasting impression on listeners.
