Afropunk Atlanta is returning for a third year on October 13th and 14th. The newly announced lineup consists of N.E.R.D, The Internet, Wicked Wisdom, Benjamin Booker, and more. The Atlanta version of the famous NYC festival will be yet another iteration of the immersive festival experience.
The festival is taking place in Atlanta’s 787 Windsor Complex. The newly adopted “The People Resist” theme for the festival will surely make room for a celebration of race, diversity, and love in the face of the hateful America of today.
One of the headliners of the Atlanta location, N.E.R.D, is fresh off the release of their latest album NO_ONE EVER REALLY DIES. The sweeping record features big names like Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar. The former-featured track “Lemon” just received the remix treatment with platinum-selling pop rapper Drake. Their set is sure to excite the dedicated Afropunk fans.
Other acts featured in the festival are The Internet and Wicked Wisdom. The Odd Future- formed Internet’s latest album Ego Death was nominated for a Grammy. The band consists of R&B artist Syd, known for her single “Over”, and Matt Martians. Their set is sure to be filled with soul and authentic hip-hop. Wicked Wisdom, fronted by Jada Pinkett-Smith, is a potentially jarring choice, as their heavy metal influences may not coincide with the sonics of the other bands. Nevertheless, their set is sure to excite the crowds.
Also performing are Benjamin Booker, Noname and Little Simz. Booker’s second studio album, Witness, was praised for its retro feel and reflection of racism in America. Hip hop artist Noname has been the talk of critics. The artist released her debut mixtape Telefono back in 2016. The Nigerian Little Simz is also set to perform, drawing her tracklist from her multitude of mixtapes and recent album Stillness in Wonderland.
The remainder of the lineup consists of Serpentwithfeet, Gaika, Yves Tumor, and Kari Faux. More announcements regarding the lineup are to come.
