Iceland has been a brewing station for incredible artists and music with Sigur Ros reigning supreme as the country’s biggest musical act. Now, though, according to Pitchfork, the three have recently been investigated and cleared for tax evasion under the scrutiny of the Icelandic Government.
Apparently, after an inquiry from the Directorate of Tax Investigations, the band’s assets were frozen. They have, however, already paid back their tax debt.
The band released their statement pertaining to the tax evasion investigation, stating that they were not responsible, but rather their accountant made a huge error. Sigur Ros member Georg Holm said that “this was quite annoying and extremely costly for us. We thought we had a good relationship with this accountant, we fully trusted him, but then it turned out he hadn’t handed in the right documents at the right time. This is nothing but a complete mess that we had no knowledge of until we were notified by the Commissioner.”
Sigur Ros had 800 million Icelandic kronur (8 million dollars) of their assets frozen by the Icelandic Government, however, all these frozen assets were band member Jonsi’s property. These assets include “thirteen properties, two motorcycles, two cars, six bank accounts, and three company shares.”
Sigur Ros is a three piece art-pop Icelandic band that began in 1994 and have been going hard ever since. They are mainly known for their expansive sound as well as the heavy use of a violin bow on guitar as implemented by frontman Jonsi.
Their discography spans over 7 studio albums, each one beautifully unique and independent in musicality and content. They have had 9 music award nominations with two wins: Best Video MTV EMAs and UK Music Video awards for Best Choreography.
Their frontman, Jonsi, has also coined a vocal term named Vonlenska. This term refers to Jonsi’s vocals on the album ( ) in which the vocals form a sort of glissando effect using meaningless syllables with non-lexical vocals. The use of Vonlenska yields beautiful ethereal sounds that only could be achieved by someone as creatively on point as Jonsi..
