Legendary grunge band Pearl Jam has just shared a politically-oriented new track titled “Can’t Deny Me”. The single was initially available for members of their Ten Fan Club only, but later extended to everyone, reveals Consequence of Sound. The band has also announced the release of a brand new record, which will follow 2013 Lightning Bolt.
The song was recorded in Seattle with producer Brendan O’Brien and it seems to be a protest song against President Trump. The artwork, designed Jeff Ament and Kevin Shuss depicts, in fact, a protest scene, where a woman is holding a placard that reads Can’t Deny Me, in front of a wall where a Pearl Jam graffiti sign has been drawn.
The band, as mxdwn reported, will be one of the headliners at Rock Werchter Festival, which will take place next July just outside Brussels. Other acts include Jack White, Queens of The Stone Age and Gorillaz. Before then, however, Eddie Vedder and the rest of the crew will perform alongside Liam Gallagher and The Killers in Milan for the International Days Festival, which will be held on June 21st.
Eddie Vedder recently performed at the Oscars, paying homage to Tom Petty, the rock music icon who died last year. The singer performed a stripped down version of the 1999 single as part of the “In Memoriam” segment, a tribute to Hollywood legends who died in the past year.
Pearl Jam, however, has always combined music and activism. A testament to that is their recently announce “Home Shows”. The band will in fact perform in their hometown, Seattle, in August for a two days event aimed at raising money and awareness for the city homelessness’ issue. According to their website, “they challenge everyone to join them — with the goal of raising a minimum of $10 million pledged toward addressing homelessness in 2018”.
