Spotify Adds New Tool That Tracks How Many Female Artists You Listen to on the App

Two unlikely partners have teamed up to change the way Spotify fans listen to music. The erstwhile Spotify has joined with Smirnoff to promote a new extension called “The Smirnoff Equilizer.” “The Smirnoff Equilizer” shows a percentage breakdown of the female vs. male musicians a listener streams. However, the extension will then generate a playlist with a more balanced gender ratio for those who have more male artists. According to press release, it comes in response to the lack of female representation in Spotify’s 2017 Year in Music statistics, where the 10 most-streamed tracks include just two songs featuring female artists.

The extension is launching just in time for International Women’s Day 2018 (Thursday, March 8).  So far, Spotify has had a shaky 2018. Wixen Publishing filed massive lawsuit against the company for 1.6 milion dollars, alleging that Spotify was using songs in their catalog without the required permissions. Then, not long before Spotify prepared to list itself as publicly traded company, Chief Content Officer Stefan Blom decided to exit. With these issues at hand a popular, culturally relevant application may be just what they need to keep their stock rising high.
