German electronic duo Mouse on Mars are celebrating their 25th year of existence, and the duo has just dropped a brand-new track, “Foul Mouth.” The song features guest appearances from Zach Condon (of Beirut fame) and Amanda Blank (Sweatheart). Beginning with a series of glitchy vocal samples and dark electronic flourishes, the song gradually picks up the pace as Blank enters to lay down some inspired rap verses. The track manages to combine old-school electronic soundscapes straight out of the 90’s with a more modern compositional style. With plenty of dense webs of samples in the background, “Foul Mouth” is the type of song that takes repeated listens to understand fully. To his credit, Condon comes in with some fantastic parts towards the end of the song, giving it a dramatic flair akin to something on a film soundtrack.
The densely layered sound is one of the calling cards of Mouse on Mars as they have been constant innovators in the electronic scene since their emergence in 1993. The duo will be releasing a new album in the form of Dimensional People on April 13th via Thrill Jockey. The record will feature a host of collaborations with the likes of Bon Iver, The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Spank Rock and many more.
