Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, the experimental Canadian group and performative art collective, has been preparing the release of their third album, DIRT, due out March 23rd via Paper Bag Records. Their band name, Yamantaka, stands for “lord of death,” in reference to the Buddhist deity of the same name. Their second single for the promotion is entitled “Hungry Ghost.”The first single released for the record, “Someplace,” was their first since 2013.
The genre-bending song is described as “noh-wave,” a pun on both Noh theatre and the No Wave style, as the group’s Asian-Canadian heritage lends to Asian J-Pop, C-Pop, prog rock, metal, and industrial, experimental music. Their past record, 2013’s Uzi, was shortlisted for the Polaris Prize, and the follow-up is, as the press release states, “poised to be the band’s most narratively ambitious project yet… funneling influences like Judas Priest, Killing Joke, and Jordan Knight through their own unique lens.” Listen to the track and check out Yamantaka // Sonic Titan’s upcoming tour dates below:
