Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) recently announced at a DJ set in Colorado that he and Talib Kweli will be releasing a new Black Star album this year as reported by The Fader. The duo released one album under the Black Star moniker in the form of 1998’s excellent Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, so hip-hop fans are undoubtedly excited at the prospect of a new release from the duo. Bey also stated that the new record was produced by the legendary Madlib, known for his work in MF Doom and his solo material.
Despite initially announcing his retirement from recording and touring, it appears that Bey cannot stay away from making music for long. He recently released a trio of albums, recording the bulk of them while he was stuck in South Africa, unable to leave the nation due to violating the countries’ immigration laws by not having a proper passport.
There is no word yet on a release date for the new Black Star record or how the album will be released, though Bey’s friendship with Jay-Z and previous releases on the Tidal music streaming platform would seem to indicate it will appear on the streaming service first.
