Night two of Girlschool 2018 had a lot to live up to after the surprise appearance of Karen O during Kristin Kontrol and The Kids’ set. Looks like night two was able to meet the expectations set by an incredible day one and surpass it with another blockbuster guest appearance.
This time the supremely gifted vocalist Fiona Apple came on stage at the Bootleg Theater to perform the Lesley Gore classic “You Don’t Own Me” along with Shirley Manson of Garbage. Manson played a six song set with an all-female mini-orchestra. Here is Manson introducing Apple before their performance together, heaping (deserved) praise on Apple. If you look closely enough at Apple’s shirt, you can see that written in black marker on her front is the phrase Kneel, Portnow, a clever reference to the bungled statement from the Recording Academy president Neil Portnow and the ensuing calls for him to resign.
And here is the song itself. “You Don’t Own Me” was recorded in 1963 by Gore when she was just 17 years old.
Girlschool will wrap up tomorrow evening with a headlining performance by Jay Som as well as Lauren Ruth Ward, Soccer Mommy, Moon Honey and more.
