Joan As Police Woman Plays Many Roles In New Video For “Tell Me”

Through a press release and the site Brooklyn Vegan, pop badass Joan As Police Woman has released a music video for her catchy yet tongue-in-cheek track “Tell Me,” which is the second single from her new full-length LP Damned Devotion. The album will be released February 9th through label Play It Again Sam.

In discussing her video, Joan states that “The director, Brian Crano, and [she] became friends when I scored his upcoming feature Permission (released the same day as my album Damned Devotion). [She] asked him if he could suggest someone to shoot [her] video and within 5 minutes he had written [her] back an entire storyline himself. He used the fact that [she] enjoys creating personas as the basis for the video. [She] play a variety of characters; a glam queen, a chef who consumes her own heart, a (self-)interrogator, photographer, etc. Let’s just say at one point [she] wields a unicorn piñata glitter canon… Tell me tell me tell me what (else) do you want? Hope you enjoy!!”

The video begins with the artist examining what appears to be rolls of film. Soon, though, she takes a piece of the negatives (of her film) and gently lays it on her tongue like a tab of some LSD. As soon as the film hits her tongue, the scene changes and the music abruptly begins as she asks her audience to tell her what they want from her. The video goes in a circle, acting like all the people we’re meeting are different sides to Joan’s consciousness. Soon, the separate characters go into their own worlds, which gives the viewer more of an understanding as to who her characters are. In retrospect, the whole video seems to portray Joan the Police Woman as someone who is constantly fighting her demons while she tries to figure out what she wants out of this strange world.
