A Statement Piece
Part two of three in a mini-album series, How to Solve Our Human Problems by Belle and
Sebastian brings the listener a thought-provoking and compelling argument of why growing up isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The already wise-beyond-their-years group released Pt. 1 in December of 2017 and plan on releasing Pt. 3 in February.
The first song of the EP titled “Show Me The Sun” is a bright, united cheer for a moment to breath. The ’60s inspired groove song has an underlying feeling of despair with an insatiable light and airy feel, “Show me the sun / Because my mind is moving at the speed of light.” The third song of the EP, “I’ll Be Your Pilot” continues the ever-growing and haunting feeling that adulthood might actually be forever. “It’s tough to become a grown up / Put it off while you can / I tell you that when / You land in the real world / It’s like quicksand.” The EP rounds out with “A Plague On All Other Boys,” a love ballad for the girl who got away. Stuart Murdoch takes his shy, but optimistic voice, and harmonizes peacefully with guitar and backup vocals. He goes on to explain that even though all this hopeful romantic wanted was to “be there, in the presence of her smile,” there is not fairytale ending for this story. “Ten long years it took to shake the memory / The pain, humiliation / But then suddenly you realize / You’re free.”
The indie-folk rock group that have been making music since the early ’90s continue to open our eyes wider, give us more to ponder over and show us all that music is the purest form of sharing common problems with one another. Growing older is scientifically impossible to stop from happening (as of now) and is something that every single human, aside form race, ethnicity or gender, has to endure. Let’s do it together and allow our friends Belle and Sebastian to hold our hands and walk us down the inevitable but enlightening path of life. Moral of this story: don’t grow up too quickly if you can help it.
