De Lux – More Disco Songs About Love

De Lux brings disco era sound into 2018

The post-disco duo De Lux has been known to make dance tracks that do more simply pay homage to the disco era. De Lux consists of Isaac Franco and Sean Guerin who have been making music together since they were fifteen years old. De Lux has also been a prominent figure on the dance-punk scene, but this latest effort makes for a solid disco listening experience.

Their latest release, More Disco Songs About Love, sounds like it could have been transplanted directly from the ‘70s and belong among some of the greats of the late disco scene. Arguably, disco never truly left the music scene, it just faded out of the prominence that it once had. With their latest release De lux reminds audiences of what captivated fans of disco in past decades.

More Disco Songs About Love delivers on the “more disco” emphasized in the title of the album. The project is laced with thick, groovy basslines and danceable drum patterns that are characteristically seen in disco era tracks. De Lux also showcases an affinity for slick synthesized melodies that help give the tracks on the album a nostalgic feel.

The tracks on the album intertwine nicely, some of them focusing more on the basslines and drum patterns and others on the synth melodies. This back and forth feel helps to give listeners a varied experience within the project. Songs such as the opening track “875 Dollars,” “Cause for Concern” and “Writing For The Money” highlights the De Lux’s use of synths and helps bring forth some of the more beautiful melodies on the album. “Cause for Concern” and “875 Dollars” both share more of a dreamy feel to them, by utilizing thick synth pads behind the rest of the instrumentation.

There are also more bass heavy tracks that focus more on the drum patterns and bring the groovy basslines to the forefront of the tracks. This is true for tracks such as “These Are Some of the Things,” “Smarter Harder Darker” and “Stratosphere Girl. These tracks particularly capture the thick basslines and smooth drum patterns that help this album standout as a prominent disco album.

However, just because a song may focus on one feature more than another does not mean that the song is lacking in the other area. This is what makes this album such a strong effort. This album is a complete disco listening experience. Tracks like “Cause for Concern” may have standout synth instrumentation but that does not mean it is lacking in basslines or drum patterns. One thing that De Lux does so well on the album is show a complete understanding of the disco genre and shows off this understand in a variety of ways.

More Disco Songs About Love is a great album to kick off the 2018 listening year. Not only does it show why people fell in love with disco to begin with, it also gives fans new reasons to love it again. De Lux are truly talented artists with a clear handle on the disco sound.
