After two rounds of announcements that saw artists like Andrew W.K., The Dwarves, Holly Miranda, The Wedding Present, Cut Worms and Shamir, SXSW Music Festival has announced its third round of showcasing artists. This go-round is the largest announcement in the history of the festival and naturally, it’s filled with both many recognizable names and even more up-and-coming unknowns from around the planet. The 2018 edition of SXSW music is scheduled from Monday, March 12 to Sunday, March 18, 2018.
Headlining this first announcement of the new year is DJ and producer Cut Chemist, noise rock group A Place to Bury Strangers, Fugees founder and hip-hop pioneer Wyclef Jean, underground rock icon Scott H. Biram, Annie Hart of Au Revoir Simone, British rock group The Dunwells, and rising UK dark pop band Pale Waves. Other notable artists include Austin locals A. Sinclair (for whom mxdwn premiered track in 2017), Midwestern noise pop artist Amy O, Spanish pop singer Bad Gyal, who is on the tip of every blogger’s tongue, Tulsa rockers BRONCHO, gender-bending indie pop artist Ezra Furman, hardcore singer-turned-folk rocker Frank Turner, metal band Gatecreeper (who just announced a split LP with Iron Reagan), Los Angeles’ Gothic Tropic, neo-surf rock group Guantanamo Baywatch, Spanish quartet Hinds – who made quite an impression on us at SXSW 2016, Los Angeles-by-way-of-Seattle surf-garage punks La Luz, slowcore band Low from Minnesota, Deerhunter offshoot band Omni, Canadian experimental rock band Ought, twee pop group Sunflower Bean, exciting Canadian guitar rock group U.S. Girls and twangy Virginia indie band Twain.
Every continent but Antarctica is represented in this third wave of showcasing artists. There are bands from North and South America, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean (Adahzeh from Jamaica and Hannah Eggen from Bermuda), the Middle East (Sangat! of Karachi, Lola Marsh of Tel Aviv and JadaL of Jordan) and even one band from Africa (Lorine Chia of Cameroon). From within the United States, every region is well-represented.

From the other side of the country are groups calling the Eastern Seaboard home. The state that acts as a bit of a bedroom community for the East Coast’s two biggest cities, New Jersey, will also send a few bands to Austin – they include Ehiorobo (Freehold NJ), Farrows (Asbury Park NJ), Tone Stith (New Jersey NJ), Kosha Dillz (Perth Amboy NJ) and VZn (Jersey City NJ). The nation’s capital has two bands, Flasher and Genocide Pact announced for the third round of showcasing artists, and the East Coast is rounded out by a gang of New England groups that include Ceschi (New Haven CT), Crunk Witch (Presque Isle ME), nothing,nowhere.
