This past weekend, Cyndi Lauper and Laura Jane Grace paired up for performance of Lauper’s 1985 hit, “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough.” According to Spin, the performance was part of Lauper’s annual Home For The Holidays benefit show. The proceeds of the show, which was held at the Beacon Theater in New York City, go to Lauper’s True Color Fund. The fund is dedicated to helping homeless members of the LGBT community. This was the 7th edition of the show, and this time Lauper welcomed iconic artists such as Jackson Browne and Ani DiFranco.
During her own set, Lauper brought out an important member of the LGBT community: Laura Jane Grace. Grace is famously known for her work as the founder, lead singer, song writer and guitarist in the punk band, Against Me!. Since their beginning in Florida in 1997, the band has became one of the most outspoken groups on the scene. Since Grace came out as transgender woman in 2012, the group has became even more outspoken. The band’s recent work has explored identity and spoken out against society’s wrongdoings. Their most recent album, Shape Shift With Me, earned them a spot at 23 on the Billboard charts. Grace has also been busy working on her web series, True Trans and releasing her memoir titled, Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout.
Grace joined Lauper performed a unique version of the 1895 hit. The song, was originally released as a single for the comedic cult classic, The Goonies, which followed the adventures of a rag-tag group of neighborhood kids. Like the film, the original song is upbeat, fun and light-hearted. Lauper originally recorded it in a synth-pop style, but this time Grace helped the 64 year old advocate and rocker perform it in a punk style.
