According to Brooklyn Vegan, alternative-rock duo, Diet Cig, has just cancelled an upcoming show at Messiah College. When Alex Luciano (vocals, guitar) and Noah Bowman (drums) found out the college had anti-LGBT policies, they immediately cut ties with the Pennsylvania venue. The show was set for November 29th. The pair released a statement on Twitter, complete with a screenshot of the contested policy with support from a recent Atlantic article about the school. The two expressed that they, “have no desire to support or benefit from an institution that discriminates against its LGBT students/faculty/staff.”

The aforementioned Atlantic article revealed a double standard in the college’s policy. All couples are expected to refrain from sexual intimacy, however heterosexual couples can feel free to openly date. On the other hand, homosexual couples must also refrain from openly dating or identifying as a couple. A bisexual student at Messiah, Dan Heiland, noted that, “…their policies are against behavior not orientation..The joke among my friends is that you can be gay at Messiah, just so long as you don’t act gay, or say gay things, or do anything to show you’re gay.”
Diet Cig will continue touring their debut album, Swear I’m Good At This, at the rest of their scheduled shows.
