Cleric Release Jazz-Metal Masterpiece “Ifrit”

Philadelphia avant-garde metal quartet Cleric have announced the release of their new song “Ifrit.” The song appears on their long-awaited sophomore album, and follow-up to 2010’s Regressions, named Retrocausal, Cleric’s first new full-length in seven years. The new record will see a release through Web of Mimicry (Trey Spruance from Secret Chiefs 3’s record label) on December 8. The nine-track album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Colin Marston. The record will also feature guest appearances from John Zorn, Mick Barr (Krallice) and Timba Harris. A cycle of songs expressing a particular theme, Retrocausal is an adventure story set in a dystopian future. Vocalist/keyboardist Nick Shellenberger said the following about the album’s makeup:

“Lyrically, Retrocausal opens a window into a bleak sci-fi landscape plagued by environmental fallout, in which corrupt governments send their citizens to die, and centers around one submarine crew that learns of their intended fate and chooses to pursue the beyond, despite the terrors that await. Told from different perspectives throughout the record, it’s a story of hope, fear, uncertainty, and constant struggle in the face of failure and death, and in search of something that may never be.”
