Tool Have Recorded a New Studio Version of 1992 Track “Opiate”

According to Metal Injection, Tool have announced they have a recorded a new studio version of their track “Opiate” via Instagram. The title track is off of their seven-track debut EP that was originally released in 1992, and produced by Sylvia Massy and Steve Hansgen, Minor Threat’s former bassist. The EP was released via Zoo Entertainment. Even though “Opiate” was never released as an official single, it was one of the best known songs among the band’s early work. Tool has played the extended version of the song live before–that you can see below–and have even filmed a music video for it. Adam Jones, Tool’s guitarist has confirmed the track exists but shares no details about when it will be released or on what.

~ We recorded a new version of Opiate not too long ago. We wrote a different break down that’s about five minutes longer in the middle of the song. I believe there are recent live versions of it online. @dominic_hailstone_ did an (unreleased) Ultimate Video for it. Anyway here’s a clip of me messing with sounds for the distant Synth Melody. *Enjoy ❤️#Tool #opiate ~

Tool’s last new album came out way back in 2006, and have released only four full-length albums released during the band’s nearly 30-year existence. The band has been working on music for while now, but the process has been long and who knows when the light at the end of the tunnel will shine. The re-recording of “Opiate” might be connected to a remastering project that the band is taking on for expected future vinyl reissues. When it comes to Tool, only time will tell.
