Milky Chance @ Riviera Theatre (01/26)

While still relatively fresh to the music scene, folk-reggae pop band, Milky Chance, has been well-received in both the U.S. and Europe with only two albums to their name. This January, their Blossom Tour brings special guest Lewis Capaldi to help them vibe-out with their Chicago fans at the Riviera.

Milky Chance is German duo that was formed in 2012 in Kassel, Germany. Originators Clemens Rehbein (singer/songwriter and guitarist), and Phillipp Dausch (DJ and Producer) began making music together after they met in an advanced music course in high school. The two first began their musical ventures playing in a local band, but after graduation the band dissolved, leading Rehbein and Dausch to create Milky Chance.

In 2013 they began working on their debut album. It was not long until they began revealing new tracks. Most notably the popular cut “Stolen Dance”. This song, to the duo’s surprise, went viral and curated millions of views and listens. Subsequently, their debut album Sadnecessary was released. The album included hits like “Flashed Junk Mind” and of course “Stolen Dance”. This album’s success, accompanied by viral singles, launched Milky Chance’s career into a series of sold-out tour dates and award nominations.

Most recently, the band returned to the studio to record and release their sophomore album, Blossom. As the duo continues to make music, they continue to advance their sound and push it to new lengths. Rehbein’s smooth crooning vocals on top of mellow guitar riffs has an almost folk-reggae sound, with an added dash of electronica provided by Dausch’s production.

Despite the “laid back” mood to most of their content, the band maintains an energetic and entertaining presence on stage. Their Lollapalooza set was both sonically and visually masterful, and included a guitar solo from Rehbein. It is safe to say that with this band’s influence quickly spreading, they will be one of the best live shows of next year.
