Flogging Molly @ House of Blues (12/30)

Few bands have as much heart, charisma, or swagger as Flogging Molly. At the end of December, the folk-rock band hits the House of Blues for a pair of shows bringing along the many hits, the high energy, and of course, the passion.

Flogging Molly is a Los Angeles-based, seven-piece band founded in 1997. Front-man Dave King, who was born in Dublin, formed the group that now consists of fiddle player Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, accordion player Matt Hensley, bassist Nathen Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt, and mandolinist Bob Schmidt. Fresh-off the release of their newest album Life Is Good, the band is at the top of their game. After years of persistent touring worldwide, and their previous album Speed of Darkness landing at #9 on Billboard’s Top 200, it is easy to forget that the group began playing regularly at small L.A. bars before they took-off.

Flogging Molly refuses to be categorized as one genre. As they continue to create, they continue to refute being placed in a box. The band’s original and creative sound infuses punk-rock with Celtic instruments such as the violin, mandolin, and the accordion. This mesh creates a traditional Irish-sound containing a dash of electric guitars and punk. Brilliant examples of this sound consist of the up-beat songs “What’s Left of the Flag” and “Devil’s Dance Floor”. Undeniably, the group has been able to create authentic anthems for many, ever since their debut album Swagger in 2000. The now certified gold track “Drunken Lullabies” and “If I Ever Leave This World Alive” are perfect instances of this. Since the very beginning, to Life Is Good, the band has never wavered from staying true to themselves in their music.

If you’re in the market for an adrenaline-filled night, filled with stories of rebellion and struggle, Flogging Molly at the House of Blues is the show to see. Historically being one of the best live bands of all-time, you will not want to miss your chance to see them not once, but twice next month.
