With a mega-music-star as an older brother, it may seem as if it would be almost impossible to step out of their shadow. However, Chicago native Taylor Bennett begins to shine brightly, standing-alone as he explores his own path in the music industry. He now headlines a second annual holiday bash in his hometown city of Chicago this December at the Metro, with fellow musical peers Bianca Shaw and Melo Makes Music.
Taylor Bennett was born and raised on the South side of Chicago with his brother Chancellor Bennett, better known as Chance The Rapper. Growing up in the same household in West Chatham, it was easy for the brothers to practice their love for music together. At only 21-years-old, Taylor is now an independent music artist, pioneering a path for future Chicago creatives. He has already started his own artist-friendly label, Tay Bennett Entertainment. In 2013, he officially emerged as a solo artist when he dropped his debut mixtape The Taylor Bennett Show, that was trailed by Mainstream Music the following year. Taylor soon cultivated enough of a following to begin performing live shows, eventually selling-out the legendary Chicago venue “Reggie’s” twice. Finally, in 2015, Taylor released his debut album Broad Shoulders, that of course featured his first musical inspiration Chance The Rapper.
Despite looking almost exactly alike, Taylor successfully separates himself from his brother Chance with his delivery and rapping style. While they have a similar cadence and instrumental sound, Taylor is changing the rap game with his lyrical quality, flow, and heart within his music. As he continues to experiment and develop his sound, Taylor makes it more unique to him. This process can particularly be heard on his 2017 album, Restoration Of An American Idol. An album that features collaborations with Jeremih, Lil Yachty, as well as all-star producer Mike-Will-Made-It, that further establishes his own sound.
There is no doubt that the next sensation out of Chicago is Taylor Bennett, as he sells-out shows and makes waves all throughout the Chicago music scene. After opening for the likes of Vic Mensa, Nas and many more, Taylor is capable of making his own sound and path without needing to lean on the connection to his older brother.
