You can tell from the complete lack of any posts on mxdwn about Fever Ray between 2011 and 2017 that “radio silence” would be an understatement of what the Swedish singer-songwriter has been doing under her solo moniker since her critically acclaimed eponymous debut.
Fever Ray (née Karin Dreijer Andersson) was originally one half of the experimental electronic duo The Knife, before releasing Fever Ray in 2009 to massive critical success. Though the duo had disbanded following their 2013 record Shaking The Habitual, there has only been some inkling of activity from The Knife recently, with two creepy videos being uploaded to their Facebook page in August, along with an incredible concert film from 2014.
Though some speculated that The Knife would be reconvening to deliver new music, we got something that some would argue is even better. A new album called Plunge was announced to drop tonight from Fever Ray. The only previous information we got were the two teaser videos and debut single “To The Moon and Back” last week.
So what can we exactly expect from Plunge? In characteristically cryptic fashion, Driejer released a statement about the new album, saying, “I had a plan for how sex or at least some kind of heartfelt physical intensity could save us but I threw it off the roof along with the body and it fell into the silence that limns the edge of the song.”
What? Whatever it means exactly, hopefully it has something to do with the video for “To The Moon And Back” with its mutant S&M party is any indication, it’ll be just as freaky and unsettling as Fever Ray fans would want it to be.
