Foster The People @ Aragon Ballroom (12/1)

There are few indie-pop acts that are as talented as these three musicians. Foster The People is finally bringing their magnificent sounds and songs back to Chicago, for must-see show at the Aragon Ballroom this December.

Foster The People began in 2009 in Los Angeles. It was initially a solo act, created by the multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Mark Foster. However, he eventually added friends Cubbie Fink (bass), and Mark Pontius (drums) to finalize the group’s lineup. Success for the ensemble began with the famous tune that we are all familiar with, “Pumped Up Kicks”. This song was the band’s first big break, and after its release in 2011, the group signed a deal with Columbia’s imprint, Startime International. Later that year, a self-titled EP was released by the group and soon became a worldwide hit. The very next year, the band took home the Billboard Music Awards’ “Top Rock Song” award, and were nominated for many other honors.

After their explosion into the mainstream, the band released their debut full-length album Torches, that only further fueled the Foster The People popularity fire. Over the next few years the group would release two albums, Supermodel in 2014, and Scared Hearts Club in July of 2017. This most recent album was Mark Foster produced. Foster decided to explore a new direction, and experimented with different sounds, giving the project an 80’s R&B feel that was funkier, and more electronic than the band’s typical sound.

While their music can be categorized as indie-pop, the art they create is far from your average pop song. Foster The People makes very melodic, atmospheric, and dance-oriented music. These traits are all included in what is called indie-pop, and can be defined as a direct opposition to the mainstream sound of typical pop songs, but Foster The People includes a slew of sub-genres within their unique sound. The smooth, groovy, and light-hearted vibe lends to a sub-genre called alternative-dance. Alternative-dance is a mixture of alternative rock and post-disco dance music. This sound can be heard all throughout their music, especially on the tracks that will be performed live such as “Best Friend”, “Helena Beat”, and “Sit Next to Me”.

This trio is a necessity to see live. This would be a hard opportunity to pass up for Chicagoans this December, considering the amount of pleasant-sounding hits and tunes Foster The People has. Do not miss your chance to see the renowned group along with their openers, Cold War Kids and Sir Sly!
