After nine albums of solo work, many of us think we know what to expect from Ty Segall. Yet, time after time he continues to invent himself. Today, about 10 Months after the release of his most recent album, Ty Segall brings us a new song. (Check out the MXDWN review of Ty Segall here.)
“Meaning” is a deceptive burst of energy. It starts in the indie garage rock style that Segall is known for, albeit a bit more drum heavy. Yet, around the one minute mark it becomes something else entirely. The lo-fi nature of the music is cranked up heavily, along with the volume. Vocals are provided by Denee Segall, Ty Segall’s wife.
Press release addresses the multi-faced style of “Meaning” by saying to make it, “Ty Segall reaches deep down into his deep bag of rocks and pulls out an uptempo dance number, an armload of guitars and a hardcore jam, urging us ultimately to jailbreak from the self-imposed thought prison we’ve all been raised in.” The message ends simply: “I see fear in freedom…” Is this what’s holding us back? Ask yourself, man!
Don’t miss Ty Segall on November 3rd in Los Angeles for a Puerto Rico benefit show!
