Shilpa Ray Transports to a Hellish NYC Concert in Video for “Morning Terrors Nights of Dread”

Shilpa Ray’s new video for her single, “Morning Terrors Nights of Dread,” helps transport Halloween fans and rock fans alike to an alternative universe that is reminiscent of both Rocky Horror Picture Show and Where the Wild Things Are. The cheeky video, directed by Candace Thompson, starts with a POV shot from Shilpa, who is manning the door at a club. She encounters an array of broke, discombobulated, pretentious and entitled people trying to get into the club for free. The scene is relatable and hilarious, and sets the tone for the rest of the video. The video then transports viewers to the gates of heaven and hell, which are both staged like the club entrance-complete with beefy bouncers and a painfully long line. Inside the gates of hell, Shilpa and her animalistic band perform the song for their hellish guests who are invited to “drink the kool aid,” by a devilish character nearby. It looks like Carrie’s prom-only this time her classmates are embracing her dark side.  The video finishes with the band chaotically destroying the instruments in a way that would make Pete Townshend proud.

The song, is equal parts naughty and nice. It starts with touches of doo-wop and surf-rock, and ends with full on punk vibes. Shilpa begins by breezily singing the verses, as her back up singers croon along in perfect harmony like The Beach Boys. She ends by screaming her lungs out in utter annoyance at a furious pace, as the guitar shreds unforgiving riffs full of feedback, reverb and distortion. It is like being torn out of a delightful dream and thrown into a harrowing nightmare. “Morning Terrors Nights of Dread,” is the second video and third single for Shilpa’s recent (September) album Door GirlShilpa uses her experience performing at dive bars to create a running commentary on New York and all of the crazy characters that are bred there. Shilpa will tour the album for the next two months. In October Shilpa will wrap things up in Europe, and in November she will begin her North American leg of the tour.
