John Cale, who performed at the Velvet Underground and Nico Concert earlier this year, and Moe Tucker join together to perform a Velvet Underground classic “I’m Waiting for the Man”. As this year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Velvet Underground & Nico, John Cale has been honoring the album.
The Velvet Underground was a rock band that formed in New York City with Lou Reed as a singer/guitarist, John Cale as a multi-instrumentalist, Sterling Morrison as a guitarist, and Angus MacLise as a dummer. MacLise was later replaced by Moe Tucker in 1965. The Velvet Underground & Nico was their debut album released in 1967, including the song “I’m Waiting for the Man”.
According to Stereogum, the performance was aired Friday night as a part of PBS’s Great Performances series. In the video shown below, Cale sings and plays keys while Tucker played the woodblock, along with the rest of Cale’s band. Cale also sang Lou Reed’s part. Even through the years between the band’s release of the song and the performance, there are still a lot of similarities in the vocals and tune.
