Sufjan Stevens Releases Gentle New Song “Wallowa Lake Monster” Created From a Previous Album Outtake

With 11 studio albums under his belt, there’s no doubt that Sufjan Stevens has some extra material lying around. Well, today we get to hear an outtake from his 2015 album, Carrie & Lowell. The song, “Wollowa Lake Monster,” speaks about Stevens’ mother, like most of the rest of the tape. “But have you heard the story of my mother’s fate?” Stevens sings over a gently arpeggiated guitar. “She left us in Detroit in the rain with a pillow case.”

“Wollowa Lake Monster” is not a one-off, it comes from The Greatest Gift mixtape. A forthcoming project from Stevens which will make public years of outtakes, remixes, and demos. It will be made available on yellow cassette, translucent yellow vinyl and all digital formats on November 24. Pre-Orders can be made here, with portion of the proceeds from the release will benefit the Cancer Support Community.

Bonus: Sufjan Stevens’ classic tape, Illinois, just went gold.
